AI Citations

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or another AI engine a question, the AI pulls information from sources it trusts and often names those sources directly — that's a citation. Being cited means your brand appears in the AI's answer as a credible, authoritative source. It's the new version of appearing on page one of Google — except far more powerful, because the AI is actively recommending you by name to someone already looking for what you offer.

AI engines prioritise websites that signal trustworthiness, authority and clarity. Key factors include structured data and schema markup, entity recognition, content depth and accuracy, domain authority, and how well your site aligns semantically with the query. Sites with poor structure, missing schema, or thin content are routinely overlooked — even if they rank well on Google.

Not necessarily — and this is one of the most dangerous misconceptions right now. Traditional SEO optimises for keyword relevance and backlinks. AI citation readiness requires semantic structure, entity clarity and schema markup that most SEO strategies don't address. A site can be #1 on Google and completely absent from AI answers.

The primary engines to target are ChatGPT (OpenAI), Perplexity AI, Google Gemini, Bing Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews (formerly SGE). A well-structured, entity-rich site with strong schema tends to perform well across all of them simultaneously — which is why the foundation matters more than platform-specific tactics.

SEO & GEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) makes your website rank higher in traditional search results — Google's blue links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) makes your content appear in AI-generated answers. SEO focuses on keywords, backlinks and technical performance. GEO focuses on semantic clarity, entity authority, structured data and content that AI models can extract, understand and confidently cite. Both matter — but GEO is where the next wave of organic traffic is coming from.

No — but it's evolving fast. Traditional SEO still drives significant traffic and remains important. Google itself is now an AI engine with AI Overviews, blurring the line between SEO and GEO. The sites that win are those that nail both: strong technical SEO foundations combined with AI-ready content and schema.

Schema markup is structured data embedded in your site's code using Schema.org vocabulary. It tells AI engines unambiguously what your content is — whether you're an organisation, product, service or article. Without it, AI models infer what you do from raw text, leading to confusion and missed citations. With it, the AI can confidently extract your brand name, services, location and expertise and include them in answers.

An entity is any clearly defined real-world thing — a brand, a person, a product, a place. Entity SEO ensures AI models and knowledge graphs recognise your brand as a distinct, trusted entity. When an AI knows who you are as an entity, it can confidently reference you in answers even when someone doesn't mention you by name. Being established as an entity is the difference between being mentioned and being recommended.

Crawling & Technical

They crawl, but differently. Googlebot crawls for indexing in real-time search results. AI crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot crawl to train models and retrieve real-time content for answers. Many AI engines also combine pre-trained knowledge with live retrieval — meaning what you've published over time matters as much as what's live today. Your robots.txt must explicitly allow these bots.

Yes — and it's one of the most common issues we find in scans. A Disallow: / rule under User-agent: * blocks all bots by default — including GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Many sites set this up years ago and never revisited it. This single issue can make your entire site invisible to every AI engine overnight.

Directly, less so than for Google. But indirectly, yes — AI crawlers that time out on slow pages simply won't index your content. Speed is a hygiene factor: it won't get you cited on its own, but a slow site can quietly prevent you from being cited at all.

Working with Citenex

Technical fixes like schema markup and robots.txt corrections can show results within days. Deeper improvements — entity authority, content strategy, knowledge graph presence — typically take 4 to 12 weeks. AI citation improvements can be dramatic and rapid once the right signals are in place.

Your overall AI visibility score, a breakdown of how each major AI engine perceives your site, specific issues across schema, entity recognition, content quality, crawl accessibility and technical structure — each with a severity rating and a clear, actionable fix recommendation.

Rarely. In most cases, AI citation readiness is achieved through targeted additions to your existing site — schema markup, content restructuring and technical corrections. A full rebuild is only recommended when the site's architecture fundamentally prevents clean crawling or semantic clarity. Our scan will tell you clearly which path is right for you.
